This thesis examines the interactive relation between literature and film mainly in the period of silent movies of Europe in 1908-1932. Early film’s lack of specific languages led to a need for narrative styles and ‘good’ texts from literary works. From 1908 to the mid 1910’s appeared the so-called ’literary films’ based on well-known literary works of the 19th century, with their scenarios written by famous authors. From the mid twenties modernist authors tried ‘filmic writing’ applying filmic techniques to their works such as montage, close-up, flashback, variable point of view and multi-perspective. Among these works are John Dos Passes’ novel Manhattan Transfer (1925), Alfred Döoblin’s novel Berlin Alexanderplatz (1929), and many others. It is the main purpose of the thesis to analyse such ‘productive interactions’ between both media in the first phase of their relationship in cultural history.
