As the transcription of loan words of Korea and Japan have been changing constantly, this paper is due to contrast the old transcription to the current transcription of these two countries and to examine the characteristics and the problems. Since the late 19th century, there have been many loan words originated in English. It is a cardinal principle to spell the loan word according to the transcription. However, as English is a foreign language, it is still difficult to spell English phonetically and it is usually spelled likely to the actual pronunciation. Also, in case, there might be more than one pronunciation, so it will cause a great confusion if there are no concrete rules. Therefore, the purpose of the transcription is to unite the various ways of spelling into one. In other words, making the rules for spelling loan words is to spell the standard loan words properly. Korean and Japanese language use different segments and syllabic structures. So there are many differences in accepting English as loan words. Therefore this study could be significant in the a standpoint of the further interactive understandings between Korean and Japanese language.
