The characteristics and difficulties of translation of Chinese-Korean IT-related Terminology

IT(Information Technology) is the essential business between Korea and China in the 21st century and the needs for translation of IT-related terminology are growing rapidly. Korean-Chinese IT translation is facing difficulties which cannot easily be overcome with individual translator’s efforts because it includes the wide range of meanings and specialized areas. Chinese IT-related sentences as source text bear different meanings compare to the original literature works or daily use language. This is especially because a phase of adoption for foreign language became more prominent in the arrival of the information age. Firstly, English friendly Chinese writing and Chinese friendly IT-related terminologies are widely used. Secondly, new words are created and used by translating English terms into localized Chinese language. Thirdly, there are many words, which are created by conjoining English and Chinese morphemes. Fourthly, it is the tremendous increase of new words and popular words. The last phase is condensation of new words. The difficulties appeared when IT-related Chinese sentences translated into Korean are; Firstly, the use of English accent the way it is. Secondly, there is no right expression and words to translate into Korean. Building a database for Chinese IT-related terms will be the final alternative proposal to solve all those difficulties. Since there is no recognizable authorized database for the translation, the trustable Chinese search sites or dictionary and Korean site of ‘Telecommunication Technology Dictionary’ for English written words are the only ways to translate correctly. Those ways could be useful in the present time, but in the long run, new database should be built to conserve consistency of specialized terminology.
