The Concept of Love Poems in Poetics of Ch’ing Age and the Concept of Love in Sijo

There were three tendencies on free love and sexual love of human at Ch’ing age: the left wings that affirm it, the right wings that deny it, and the eclectics. All three of them agree on the view that “the poetry derives from the human nature,” but they distinguish themselves by their accentuation on “the just of nature,” or “the truth of nature.” People who pursue the just of nature try to edify the Confucian ethics through poetry, and those who pursue the truth analyze the action of human love as the true expression of human nature. In a modern view, poetics of that era ‘over-suppresses’ the human desire. But Yuan Mei not only affirms the description of love between men and women in love poems, but also admits that ‘lust’ and ‘desire’ reflect the true human nature. Poetics of Korean sijo had also affirmed the minority’s expression of love between men and women, in spite of the strong flood tide of Confucianism that stresses the ethics in poetry.
