Transition of the Place of Residence and the Family Form, and Future Prospects of the South Korean Students Studying Abroad at an Early Stage

  • 121

It might be pointed out as a characteristicof the South Korean society that children's educational issues become one of the big factors which cause migration of family members in comparison with Japanese. In this paper, I examine how international migration aiming for education is performed focusing on transition of the place of residence and the family form through analysis of the interview research data of the South Korean students studying abroad at an early stage and their family members. I also examine what kind of future prospects those students have. By means of interview research data, I focus my effort on making a chart of 37 students, illustrating transition of the place of residence / the family form and future prospects of them, and then analyze them in 3 groups: (1) students who have already entered university or college; (2) students who are over second-year in junior and senior high schools; (3) children who are in elementary schools or first-year in junior high schools. As a result, what. I've found out are as follows: In the style of most often seen in group 1, children whose parents had the opportunity of living abroad for work tended to go to study abroad at an early stage with their mothers. Nowadays, studying abroad at an early stage has expanded to children whose parents have no opportunity of living abroad: the style of students going abroad without mothers is increasing even if children are very young. Although the target countries finally tend to converge on the United States for higher education, the design of routes reaching there are diversified: going by way of non-European / American countries or non-English speaking countries, or going by way of international junior high or foreign language senior high school at home, etc. Moreover, the course design of taking higher education in China has also appeared. After higher education in the U.S., various prospects are shown; going back to Korea, settling down in the U.S., coming and going between Korea and the U.S., being active globally without any base country.
