The Syntactic Analysis of Korean Nominalization Constructions

The aim of this study is to suggest the syntactic structures of a nominalization in Korea within a constraint based syntactic theory. First this study investigates the approaches of Malouf(1998) which tried to explain the English nominalization in HPSG. On the contrary to English, this study suggested three types of syntactic structures in Korea such as noun-possessive construction, finite-head-subject construction, and nonfinite-head-subject construction, based on the diagnostic of various phemonema on the Korean nominalization. It depends on the subject cases realized within the gerund phrases. In the types of noun-possessive construction and finite-head-subject construction, the main verb subcategorizing a gerund phrase requires that the verb form of a gerund phrase should be a finite. And the verb subcategorizing the type of nonfinite-head-subject construction requires a nonfinite verb form of a gerund phrase.
