The present study, having recognized the drastic reduction in the scale of the animation market in Japan since the mid 2000s, is based on a critical view of the change in the development factors, that had long been emphasized, of the Japanese animation industry. Such a continuous decrease in the size of the market implies the possible loss of the driving force on which the animation industry depended. The result of an actual analysis showed that the collapse of home video market and the decline in the sales of foreign copyrights were the reasons behind the diminution of the market size. Moreover, according to an analysis of the major factors for the development of the animation industry, it was found that there had been a change serious enough to cause a deciding influence on the reduction of the market size and that this tendency would not be easily faltered.
