배심원 토론 수업의 교육적 효과

Effects of Jury Debate as a Classroom Debate Instruction

토론 교육의 방법으로는 모둠 토론, 녹화기록법과 메타 교수-학습 방법, 디베이트 등 다양한 방법이 있다. 본 연구에서는 교실 토론의 방법으로서 배심원 토론 수업 방법을 소개하고 그 효과를 검증하였다. 배심원 토론은 비형식적인 모둠 토론과 달리 토론의 규칙과 절차를 익힐 수 있으며, 대회 토론과 달리 다양한 방식으로 자유롭게 토론에 참여할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 본 연구에서는 독서 토론의 형식으로 배심원 토론 수업을 하고 사전사후 검사를 실시하였다. 그 결과 토론에 대한 인식, 논리력과 분석력, 의사소통 능력, 자료조사와 준비, 토론의 태도 등에서 긍정적인 효과를 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서 배심원 토론 수업은 토론의 규칙과 절차를 이해하고 토론 능력과 태도를 향상시키는 데 적합한 교실 토론의 방법이라고 할 수 있다.

Debate instructions vary from small group discussions, videotaping methods, to debate-style discussions. This article aimed to introduce the jury debate as a classroom debate instruction and to examine its effects. Students of the jury debate instruction were able to learn rules and processes of debates, compared to the informal-and-small group discussion. In addition, they participated in the jury debates more freely which was less strict than formal debating competitions. The results of matched pair t-test showed positive effects of the jury debate instruction about students’ concepts of debates, reasoning and analyzing skills, communication skills, researching references and preparations for debate, and students’ debate attitude. Findings of the study offered implications that the jury debate instruction would be a useful method for students 1) to learn rules and processes of debates and 2) to improve their skills and attitude toward debates.
