This study explored the perspectives of Korean secondary school teachers for an in-depth examination of ‘why’ and ‘how’ they conducted TEE classes. Adopting a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and journals from six secondary level English teachers regularly practicing TEE. The analysis of data revealed three main themes: (a) an English teacher’s duty for students, (b) a continuously developing language learner model, and (c) student-centered classes. The participants felt it was their duty to perform TEE lessons to expose students to English and provide more chances for using English in the EFL context. The teachers also viewed themselves as a successful language learner model pursuing continuous development. Finally, the participants believed student-centeredness represented their TEE classes, with the level and amount of English being decided on the basis of students’ needs. The findings reflect the motives for and ways of conducting TEE classes from the practicing teachers’ perspectives.
