In contrast to common Yan castle sites of the Liao ning area, the Li shu prefecture Er ronghu castle site which is located in the upper and middle reaches of the Dong Liao river area, is structurally unique in that the castle wall is built with a mixture of pebbles, the southern gate is built in crisscross fashion, there are no architectural pavilions or handicraft workshops and is even more unique in that Yan castle sites, settlement sites and tumuli are completely absent and are instead lined up with the indigenous cultures of the Dong Liao river area. In the sites of the indigenous groups of the Dong Liao river area around the Er ronghu site, imitations of Yan high pedestalled vessels, iron implements manufactured in Yan such as iron hoes are being excavated. Considering that Yan iron implements brought to the indigenous groups efficiency and production increase unmatchable with the previously used stone implements, we know that the Er ronghu site was an important trading post between Yan Liao dong commandery and the indigenous groups of the Dong Liao river area. However, the Er ronghu site is located too far from Yan Liao dong commandery to be explained as a simple trading post. What is worthy of note is the possibility that the northern Liao dong Yan great wall had a weak defensive structure to the extent that there are no remains left today. On account of these points, the Er ronghu castle site, which was located in the center of the indigenous groups of the Dong Liao river area, in addition to being a trading post, was a multipurpose castle which controlled the hostile activities and military invasions of the Dong Liao river area indigenous groups against Yan.
