The royal tomb of Gwanggaetodaewang(廣開土大王) has been identified as either Taewangreung or Janggunchong at Jiãn, Jilinxing in China, in spite of the existence of the gravestone for the royal tomb of Gwanggaetodaewang. Recently, the authorities have evenattempted to conclude that Taewangreung should be the royal grave site of Gwanggaetodaewang, due to the excavation process in relation to the East-northen area project(東北工程) in China (the attempt to view the history of Mãnzhõu--the east-northen part of China--as the history of China). The bibliographical/ archaeological study, however, seems to reveal the fact that Taewangreung should never be the royal grave site of Gwanggaetodaewang. There is a reasonable theory that Taewangreung may be the royal grave site of Gogukwonwang, who psychologically led the people of Koguryo after his death at the war against Paekche. Janggunchong has been identified as either the real royal tomb of Jangsuwang or the royal tomb that was symbolically decorated for Jangsuwang. Both theories, however, have failed to prove all that; they even supported the theory that Janggunchong may even be the royal tomb of Gwanggaetodaewang. Further, the monument for Gwanggaetodaewang was erected after the construction of Taewangreung (the royal tomb of Gogukwonwang) and Janggunchong (that of Gwanggaetowang). The monument stood parallel with Taewangreung and Janggunchong. It was intentional that the location of the monument was close to Gogukwonwang. The monument states an overwhelming victory over Baekje, which clearly opposes the repeated defeat in wars against Baekje under the reign of Gogukwonwang. This is why the monument should be construed as a stone monument that highlights his achievements, not as a usual tombstone in front of a royal grave site that simply records the life history of a king. Satisfying his grandfather’s grudge, the monument announces the fruit of launching into south and the hope for the upcoming transfer of the capital under the rule of Jangsuwang. The misunderstanding about the historical background in relation to the location of the monument have resulted in a mistaken conclusion that the tomb of Taewang is after all that of Gwanggaetodaewang, which constantly creates meaningless debates.
