Current Status and Action Plan for Cultural and Educational Development of Korean Chinese

Chinese society has been undergoing great change since reform and opening. Ethnic minority communities within China are faced with new problems since the country’s opening. Today, cultural and educational development of ethnic minorities is encountering many challenges amidst urbanization and market reform. Although the economic, cultural, and educational situation of Korean Chinese has received priority among those of many ethnic minorities in China in the past, today even Korean Chinese are experiencing many difficulties after the nation’s opening and reform, such that the status of their cultural and educational progress is far from optimistic. This paper will look back on the past record of cultural and educational development of Korean Chinese, examine its present status and survey plans of response for the future, thereby presenting a picture of minority cultural and educational development in the multiethnic nation that is China.
