  • 861

In twelve century, the making of Koryo celadon reaches at her zenith in technique. Especially, porcelainous stonewares with a fine bluish-green glaze, so called Chongja or celadon, were well known during the Koryo dynasty. Koryo celadons reveal vivid lifestyle and taste of aristocracy at those times. In this paper, I tried to understand the varieties of celadon decorations and shapes regarding how the shapes of celadon changes through times goes on and what many kinds of decoration use to the celadons. The kinds of celadon shape are bottle, lobed dished, wine ewer, bowl, cub, long-necked bottle, vase, storage jar, and so on. In Koryo celadon, the glaze on inlaid piece has a more transparent appearance than on porcelainous stonewares without inlay. and its surface is supposed to be crackled. Common technique of Koryo celadon is sanggam decoration. Floral designs of Koryo celadon are willow, plum, bamboo, chrysanthemum, vine and grapes, peony, etc. Their are also faunal decorations such as egret, phoenix, duck, dragon, crane, lotus, and so forth. During the second half of the thirteenth and fourteenth century, the quality of glaze and body declined, and the design of celadon became more simple and more stylish as well. Such kinds of trend are surely appeared on the design of willow, reed, and water bird design (poryusuguemmun).
