The Oriental Development Company, the huge exploiting arm, was extablished by the key figures in the development of the meiji military oligarchy such as Yamagata Aritomo, Katsura Taro and Terauchi Ma-sana to encourage the settlement of Japanese colonists, and its ramified interests also took in lumbering, mining and manufacturing enterprises. The primary goal of the Oriental Development Company was expres-sed the Japanese Administration in 1914; Formerly Japanese buying paddy and dry fields in Chosen aimed at obtaining incomes by renting them to Korean tenants or reaping profits by reselling them’, Now those undertaking agricultural indu-stry themselves are gradually increasing. Besides, as a result of the efforts put forth by the Oriental Development Company under Government Directions to encourage the immigration of Japanese farmers living in Chosen has greatly increased. The study is arranged into four parts, The first part sets the details of the political climate which had been necessitated the extablishment of the Oriental Development Company. The second part examines the principal means by which the Oriental Development Company promoted the immigration of the Japanese farmers into Korea. In the third part, particular attention is given to the fact that the Osakas merchants who became majority stock-holder of the Oriental Development Company took an active lead in assisting the transforma-tion of Korea’s peasant agriculture into an export agriculture. The last part gives an account of Oriental Development Company served as an extremely effective instrument for expropriation of the Korean peasantry.
