This paper traced the national consciousness and the enlargement drive of women's rights of Na Hyesuk. And examined also her resultant frustration and failure in the ambitious attempts of improving the position of Korean women in the conventional society being dominated generally by male superiority. Na Hyesuk was a modern woman whose thoughts go a step ahead of her contemporaries. Although Korean women have been bound up in the yoke of the feudalistic ideas in the Confucian traditions, a few foresighted women began to be conscious of improving their position in the conventional society. And they launched their enlightenment drive for Korean illiterate women and sublimed it to the nationalist movement. The natural rights of man emphasized by Na Hyesuk came up with the theoretical background for the self-consciousness and emancipation movements of Korean women. Na Hyesuk initiated positively enlightenment campaign for the suppressed women and tried to realize equalization of status between man and woman in social and economic activities. She led Korean women to join with the emancipation campaign from the conventional customs and the independence movements during the Japanese imperialist rule.
