The Advance of Paekje Army to the Coastal North China

There were several excellent articles on the study of Paekje’s territories in the southwestern Manchuria written by scholars of the southern and northern parts of Korea. This paper further argues that the army of Paekje advanced to the coastal regions of Wei(魏) Empire (386-557) in North China, and that Paekje established her own colonies with the help of her superior navy, the suppressed Chinese or the peoples of different ethnic origins who were compulsorily moved to these regions. This writer thinks that the evidence come from Pai-ch’i Chuan(百濟傳) in Nan-ch’i Shu(南齊書) where the King of Paekje’ asked Nan-ch’i to authorize his appointments of governors to Kuang-yang(廣陽), Ch’ing-ho(淸河), Ch’eng-yang(城陽), etc. These place names indicate that they were located in the coastal North China. The interests of Paekje and Nan-ch’i were in accord by the recognition of the advance of Paekje to North China. The weak and trouble-ridden Nan-ch’i apparently wanted to divert the pressure of Wei force which were originally a nomadic militant people of North. The ambitious Paekje apparently wanted new territories in forth China, and also wanted the cooperation of the sup-pressed Chinese in the regions by showing them that the army of Paekje was sent by the Nan-ch’i government. The occupation of Paekje in certain parts of North China could have continued to the period of Pei-ch’i(北齊) Empire which substituted Wei. Pei-ch’i Shu under the year 571 A.D. says that the emperor of Pei-ch’i appointed the King of Paekje to the post of tz‘u-shih(刺史) of Eastern Ch‘ing-chou, which, this writer thinks, was a part of Shantung Peninsula. This year was seven years prior to the fall of Pei-ch’i regime to her arch rival Pei-chou. The view of this paper supports the comment of Choi Chi-won, a noted writer of Silla, who said that the forces of Paekje and Kokuryo invaded the seaboard North China from the mouth of Yangtze River to the coast of new Hopei Province.
