Purpose: This study was to analyze the effect of infection prevention education on self-care performance and infection occurrence in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Method: This study used a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The subjects were 65 patients with 33 of control and 32 of experimental, who received chemotherapy in a university hospital in D city. The study was conducted from August 1st to September 30th, 2010. Data were analyzed with t-test and chi-square test. Results: The results were as follows; Hypothesis 1. “The experimental group would show higher scores in self-care performance than that of control” was accepted(t=7.84, p=.001. Hypothesis 2. “The experimental group would show less severity of stomatitis symptom than that of control” was accepted(x²=6.78, p=.015). Hypothesis 3. “The experimental group would show higher levels of neutrophils than that of control” was rejected(t=1.99, p=.055). Conclusion: Infection prevention education for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy would be a useful nursing intervention to increase self-care performance and decrease severity of stomatitis.
