조선시대 조각보에서 유형의 분류와 그리드의 구성자질 고찰

Observation on Taxonomy of Types and It’s Constituent Features of Grids in Jogakbo of the Joseon Dynasty

본 연구는 조선시대 조각보의 구성에 있어서 공간분절과 결합의 절차를 고찰함으로써 조각보의 창작의 주체인 여성들의 공간적 사유에 있어 그들이 평면을 분할할 뿐 만 아니라 분할된 단위들을 결합하여 완성된 그리드체계를 구축하는 절차를 다루는 데 목적이 있다. 조각보의 조형적 실체를 파악하기 위해서 ‘시각언어이론’을 도입하여, 조각보의 유형의 분류와 자질들의 구조를 수리적, 정량적으로 다룸으로써 조각보의 그리드 체계가 O형의 프랙탈 구조의 공간적 사유를 드러냄을 확인하였다.

The objective of this research is to examine how the spatial units in the grid system of Joseon-period Jogakbo are divided and combined, in order to comprehend spatial thinking of anonymous Joseon women who designed and made Jogakbo, the Korean patchwork wrapping-cloth. Most studies on the grid system of Jogakbo took a style-oriented, qualitative approach, focusing on the aesthetic aspect of the grid system. This research adopts an alternative approach, as it establishes database for the grid system of Jogakbo for a more technical explanation, bring in ‘Visual Linguistic Theory’. The research verified and further analyzed the aforementioned three points. Two of them were previously examined in quantitative and technical methods, showing that the Joseon women used ‘juxtaposition’ and ‘superposition’ in dividing and combining spatial units on Jogakbo. In terms of type and level of complexity, the patterns revealed discreteness, using 17 types of concatenation and medium-level structures. Regarding the third point, general features of Jogakbo were mathematically identified by quantifying unit elements, examing distribution of featural ploidy in Jogakbo, and the result showed that 67% of the Jogakbo samples showed O-type grid system. In the final analysis, The research presented that Jogakbo has O-type fractal structure and grid system, and demonstrated that Joseon women’s spatial thinking contained diverse concatenate structures to express unique Korean aesthetic.
