T’oegye : His Philosophy, Spirituality and Education

The purpose of the paper is to explore T'oegye's philosophy' spirituality, and bridge him and today's education of spirituality. T'oegye, the pen name of Yi Hwang, was one of the most import Korean Confucian scholars of the Choson period(1392-1910). He was a culmination of Confucian philosophy in Asia. The scope of the paper is to examine 1) his life, 2) his Neo-Confucian philosophy including cosmology, anthropology, epistemology and axiology, 3) his spirituality of dwelling in piety and 4) loving people and all things which is the fruit of dwelling ,in piety. The method of the paper is to revisit his literature with a hermeneutical mind, to highlight his spirituality in relation with his whole philosophical scheme, and to 'translate' his spirituality into today's school context. The significance of his paper lies in that it revives a spiritual master T'oegye into today's education. In fact he has been being studied all over the world including many universities. The paper supports the T'oegye-study to enrich th global spirituality and education.
