『제7서한』에 나타난 플라톤의 교육론

The Educational Implication of Plato’s 7th Epistles

이 논문은 플라톤의 서간문 『제7서한』 에 나타난 그의 교육론을 밝혀내고 재해석하는 데 목적이 있다. 제7서한은 플라톤의 생애, 활동, 관심사 및 철학과 교육에 대한 관점이 잘나타나 있는 저작이다. 교육학적 시각에서 『제7서한』 은 철학자 교육의 중요성에 대해 논의 하면서도 일반 시민들의 좋은 습관 형성과 시민으로써 충실한 직분을 강조하는 이중적 특징을 보여주고 있다. 필자는 『제7서한』 에서 제시하는 교육을 일반 시민교육과 철학자 교육의 두 가지로 구분해서 보았다. 일반 시민교육은 시민 개인적 차원에서는 좋은 습관의 강조를 특징으로 하며, 공동체 차원에서는 폴리스에서 담당하는 직분의 수행으로 정리된다. 철학자를 양성하는 고등 교육은 철학자와 예비 철학자의 사제동행을 통해 이루어진다. 이 과정을 통해 가장 훌륭한 생활방식에 대해 충분한 지식을 갖춘 철학자들이 폴리스를 통치한다. 철 학자들과 보조자들은 입법을 통해 자신들의 지혜를 구체화함으로써 폴리스의 시민들이 행복하고 건강한 삶을 누릴 수 있게 한다. 시라쿠사에서의 체험을 통해 완성된 『제7서한』 의 교육론은 『국가』에서 그가 제시한 구상보다 진일보한 모습을 보여준다.

The Purpose of this study is to clarify the educational implication of Plato’s 7th Epistles although it has some controversity whether it was written by Plato or not. The topic of Epistles is to warn the young politicians who had served Dion, the uncle of Dionysious II who was the president of Siracusa at BCE 350. In 7th Epistles, there are some keywords which have educational meanings: way of life(tropos), custom(ethos), public duty(epitēdeumata), Philosophical Intercourse (synousia) are as following. Having a good way of life is a educational goals for every citizens. To having a good life, citizen should have good habit and custom, for it can make citizen self-control and order their family. In public sphere, citizen should obey the law and call their public duty diligently. Respecting the law and constitution( nomoi) of the state( polis) was the obligation of the citizen in Ancient Greece, which make the state safe & sound. Epitēdeumata, which can be translated either public duties or custom, mean roles of the citizen to make state sound. By participating in the public duties of the state, the citizens got excellence in both his vocational talent and moral goodness. For the education of philosophers, Plato suggests the philosophical intercourse. It is a existential method to make philosopher and pre-philosophers familiar authentically.
