Higher education in the 21st century needs more class-works for the critical thinking and writing than before. Korean universities are preparing for the investment to designing the writing classes, specially focusing on academic essays. We can see some theoretical researches on the basic ideas for academic and critical essay writing. It is, however, hardly useful to apply the theories to practical class-works in Korean universities. Subjects for “Korean Writing” in the curricula of general education cannot develop essay writing classes for the specific academic field. Besides, colleges running the academic curricula of their own studies cannot afford to invest to the writing classes even though they understand the necessity of the essay writing classes. This paper focuses on the basics of academic critical writing subject of the college of Humanities. It deals with planning, designing, running and practicing the class-works of “Critical Writing for the Performative Humanities” that is the first-year college requirement subject of College of Humanities at Hanyang University, Korea. This subject was planned and has been designed for pragmatic ways to develop critical thinking and writing of freshmen of College of Humanities. We have run the classes for one and half semester, and try to signify our practices, efforts and results of which are contents of this paper. We expect that our practices will be a model helpful to signify and develop critical academic essay writing class-works.
