A Study on Presentation Method of Discourse Marker in Korean Language Textbook based on Children’s Learning about Discourse Maker

In this paper, the researcher compared the discourse marker appeared in Korean language textbook to actual using pattern of discourse marker by Koreans and investigated what differences there were, and, based on the results therefrom, the researcher discussed what situation and sequence would be most effective for presentation. In Chapter 3, the researcher carefully reviewed the using pattern of discourse marker through transcription material of elementary school children’s discourses on the basis of such divisions. The results therefrom revealed that the weight of conjunction type became greater departing from interjection type along with their advancement to the higher grade. Also, even from functional aspect, the results thereof showed such a flow as ‘Topic related function → Speaker related function → Listener related function. In Chapter 4, the researcher investigated Korean language textbook now being used according to each level. The results showed that the discourse marker of similar type was most frequently used in all stages ranging from beginner to advanced level. Also, along with advancement to the higher grade, there appeared diversified discourse markers, however, it was presented sporadically, so the researcher could see that this had brought some difficulties to learners for using effective discourse marker. Therefore, having made comparisons between such usage patterns, the researcher enumerated those discourse markers that represent certain pattern and function according to each level ranging from beginner to advanced level. Of course, there are some limits in which such discourse markers as speaking in a courteous manner, etc. appeared less frequently comparing to others, because the discourse transcription materials which were analyzed during the research process were discourses conducted between elementary school children. However, this research will be meaningful from the aspect that discussions about the presentation method of discourse markers targeting the learners according to the stages were not taken place among the precedent studies related to Korean language educations and textbook developments.
