Akutagawa Ryunosuke’s(1892~1927) ‘artificial wings’ is the 19th subject in A Fool’s Life. ‘artificial wings’ is written contrary to the realistic description of Siganaoya(1883~1971) who Akutagawa thought the best writer of realism at that time. Akutagawa described the complex ideas with ‘artificial wings’ as allegories and ironies, which he was not able to write as realistic description. But Akutagawa’s intricate character is innately the same as Siganaoya’s nature. Therefore it is incorrect to criticise the novel written with the usage of ‘artificial wings’ as a means of hiding shame or showing pedantry without considering individual personality. It is superficial to focus on intentional acts. It is impossible to understand a man truly without understanding his mind. Such a superficial criticism is the result of confusing contents and forms.
