Micro-based Estimation a Demand Elasticities for Intermediate Education in Korea

This paper estimates income elasticities of major private educational expenditure items and education demand function in Korea The data comes from micro questionnaire surveyed to 804 ninth grade students and their parents at Taegu city in 1990. Income elasticities for private educational expenditure turn out to be inelastic ranging 0.227-0.766. Price elasticities also appear to be inelastic values around -0.47. In private tutoring households, monthly income level of 1.500 (thousand won) appears to be a tu-ning point from which tutoring pattern changes from chea academy-tutoring to expensive personal-tutoring type. which results in an unusually high income elasticity of tutoring expenditure (3.141) at 1,500-2,000 (thousand won) income bracket.
