루제비츠의 『카드인덱스 Kartoteka』에 나타나는 인물형태와 언어 분석

Analysis of the Characters and the Language in the Card Index of Tadeusz Różewicz

타데우쉬 루제비츠는 제2차 세계대전 이후 폴란드의 가장 대표적인 작가 중의 한 명이고, 『카드인덱스』는 그의 드라마 데뷔작이자 대표작이다. 루제비츠는 『카드인덱스』에서 인간의 존재문제에 대한 전반적인 모습을 다룬다. 루제비츠는 인물 구조에 있어서 이미 검증된 방식을 포기하고 새로운 방식을 선택한다. 『카드인덱스』에는 전쟁의 경험과 혼란스러운 현재의 삶을 감당하지 못하는 주인공 보하테르가 등장한다. 주인공 보하테르는 그저 무대 위로 내던져져 있을 뿐이다. 또한 등장인물들에게서는 개성이 사라지고, 인물들의 성격을 규정짓는 기본적인 요소 또한 무의미하다. 그러나 이러한 인물은 매우 종합적이고 집합적인 성격을 지닌 인물로서 세대와 민족, 직업 등을 대표하는 전형적인 성격을 가진다. 이런 작업을 통해 루제비츠가 목적하는 바는 인간을 비인격화하는 것이며, 장기판의 말이나 마리오네트같이 영혼이 느껴지지 않는 인물들을 만들어내는 것이다. 이런 방식을 통해서 루제비츠는 소외되고 고독하며, 불안해하는 현대인의 부조리한 모습을 상징화한다. 『카드인덱스』의 대화와 언어는 불연속성과 탈의미화를 특징으로 한다. 이러한 대화법은 기존의 언어를 해체하여 새로운 의사소통의 구조를 제시하려는 시도이다. 그러나 상호의미전달의 기능을 잃은 언어는 의사소통의 불가능성을 다시 확인해 주고 있다.

Tadeusz Różewicz(1921~ ) is one of the Poland’s most representative post-World War II writers and Card index(Kartoteka) marks his theatrical debut and masterpiece. Różewicz approaches the question of human existence with “Card index” covering a wide sphere of human beings. Różewicz frames up quite a different style instead of adopting a proven way in drawing characters. Bohater, the main character of “Card index” is confused with his wartime experiences and the disturbing reality he can not face. In this work, Bohater is just thrown on the stage. The other characters do not have their own individuality and the basic elements to define the personality traits of a character are futile. But each of these characters is a typical example of generation, nation and occupation as a very complex and comprehensive character. Różewicz attempts to depersonalize humans and create characters without soul such as a chessman on the chessboard or a marionette through this work. By using this style, he symbolizes the absurdities of the modern people who are full of anxiety and suffering from a feeling of isolation and solitude. Discontinuity and meaninglessness are characteristic of the language used in the conversations of “Card index”. With this unique conversational method, Różewicz seeks to present a new mode of communication by dismantling the existing structure of language. However, we can reaffirm that it is impossible for the language which fails to function as a conveyor of meanings to serve as a means of communication.
