도덕의 길 : 공산주의 붕괴 후 20년

이 논문은 중부 유럽에서, 특히 체코와 슬로바키아 사회의 모습을 반영한다. 저자는 현대사회의 정치, 경제, 사회적 문제에 초점을 맞추지 않고, 앞서 언급한 국가들, 체코와 슬로바키아의 지식인층의 희망 뿐 만 아니라 최근 위기 현상도 함께 다뤘다. 이 두 중부 유럽 국가는 지식인층 사이에서 그들의 환상을 깨며, 경제 및 정치 전환 과정의 어려움을 겼었다. 이러한 현상은 벨벳혁명이 남긴 실현되지 않은 기대로 이어졌다. 중부 유럽의 정체성의 중요한 특징으로 우리는 관료주의와 전체주의에 반대하는 저항을 여러모로 볼 수 있다. 특히 언어에서 그리고 우리 시대의 비인간적인, 기계적인 파괴성과 고통에 중점을 둔 그로테스크한 이야기를 다루는 문학에서 나타난다 (하셰크, 흐라발, 쿤데라, 타타르카). 동시에 우리는 항상 중부 유럽의 소국가들의 역사에서 보여져왔던 인간의 자유와 존엄성 그리고 도덕적 가치에 대한 투쟁 또한 볼 수 있다. 지성사의 재발견과 재평가는 오늘날 세계적인 사회문제를 다룰 때 영감을 주며, 동시에 이 국가들이 민족주의, 맹목적 애국주의, 그리고 도덕적 상대주의에 굴복하지 않을 것 이라는 희망을 준다.

The purpose of this paper is to present a reflection on the social situation in Central Europe, particularly in the Czech and Slovak Republics. The author did not focus on the sociological, political or economical situation of contemporary societies; the author dealt with the phenomenon of the current crisis as well as the hopes of intellectual elites in the above mentioned countries. Both these Central European countries have gone through a difficult period of economic and political transition, which is sometimes associated with disillusion among intellectuals. This phenomenon is linked with unfulfilled expectations of the legacy of the Velvet revolution. As a significant and specific feature of Central European identity we can see the revolt against bureaucracy and totality in many ways, especially through language and literature which – by means of bizarre stories – points to the affliction and destructivity of the impersonal machineries of our times (Hašek, Hrabal, Kundera, Havel, Tatarka). At the same time we see the struggle for human freedom, dignity and moral values which have always been present in the history of the small states in Central Europe. The rediscovery and re-evaluation of intellectual history serves as an inspiration when dealing with today’s social problems in the global world and at the same time gives hope that these countries will not succumb to nationalism, chauvinism and moral relativism.
