A Study on the Character Education in Confucianism: Focused on the Teachings of Confucius and Afterwards

유교의 인성교육론은 공자의 교육구상과 그 이후의 유교, 특히 성리학적 해석 양상을 통해 그 성격과 지향을 파악할 수 있다. 공자의 가르침은 제자들과의 대화록이라 할 수 있는 논어에 그 본의가 갖추어져있으며, 도덕성, 인간관계, 정의, 성실성 등을 강조한 데서 그 특징을 찾을 수 있다. 공자는 인성교육의 본질은 앎과 삶의 문제를 도덕적ㆍ모범적 차원에서 실천 수행하는 데 있다고 보았다. 공자의 윤리학은 윤리적 행동의 동력으로서의 도덕적 동인을 강조하는 덕의 윤리학이라고 말할 수 있다. 공자의 가르침은 단지 합리적ㆍ논리적 주장에 의존하지 않았으며, 윤리적 이상은 삶의 일상을 통해 전달되는 그 무엇이었다. 이를 규정한다면 나 자신을 가꾸는 공부를 통해 타인에 대한 이해와 배려를 본연으로 하는 교육체계라고 말할 수 있다. 성리학의 시대에 이르러, 유교의 인성교육론은 도교ㆍ불교적 문식과 함께 이기론이 장착된 새로운 해석체계로서의 공부론이 앎과 삶의 문제를 규율하였다. 하지만 공자시대의 인성교육론과 성리학의 인성교육론은 본질적 지향에 큰 차이가 없다. 유교의 인성교육론은 한국, 일본, 베트남 등 한자문화권 국가에 영향을 끼쳤으며, 이는 교육현장에서 중요한 해석학적 논점을 보여주고 있다.

This paper attempts to research character education of Confucianism and neo-Confucianism. The philosophy of Confucius emphasized personal morality, correctness of social relationships, justice, and sincerity. His teachings may be found in the Analects of Confucius, a collection of aphorisms. One of the deepest teachings of Confucius may have been the superiority of personal exemplification over explicit rules of behavior. His teachings emphasized self-cultivation and emulation of moral exemplars. Confucius’s ethics may be considered a type of virtue ethics. Confucius’s moral system was based upon empathy and understanding others, rather than divinely ordained rules. During the Song Dynasty, the scholar Zhuxi added ideas from Daoism and Buddhism into Confucianism. Neo-Confucianism proposed dualism of rational principal(li) and material force(qi) in the sphere of character education. Confucius’s works are studied by scholars in many other Asian countries, particularly those in the Sinosphere, such as Korea, Vietnam and Japan. Many of those countries still hold the perspective of traditional character education.
