A Study On J. Locke’s Empirical Epistemology

본고의 목적은 근대교육의 새로운 장을 열게 한 로크의 경험의 개념과 성격을 밝히고 그것에 의한 지식 생성과정을 살펴보는 데 있다. 이 연구 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 로크는 중세 스콜라 철학의 세계관과 자연관을 거부하고, 관찰과 실험, 귀납법을 통한 자연과 세계에 대한 새로운 시각을 제시한 베이커니즘을 바탕으로 자신의 경험철학을 발전시켰다. 그는 세계를 보는 시각 중심에 ‘인간’을 두었고, 그 인간의 경험에 입각하여 18세기 지식의 확장과 과학의 발전에 기여하였다. 둘째, 로크는 텅 빈 백지상태(tabula rasa)의 인간은 ‘경험’을 통하여 관념이 생기고 그 관념은 그 대상에 대한 지식이 된다는 경험주의적 인식론을 정착시켰다. 그는 감각과 반성의 과정을 통해 획득된 지식만이 유용한, 참된 지식이라는 경험적 지식관을 주장했다. 특히 그의 저서 〈교육에 관한 소고〉에서는 경험에 의해 형성된 이성을 지닌 자유롭고 능동적인 인간관과 경험철학에 기초한 실학주의적 교육 사상과 도야 이론을 발견할 수 있다. 이러한 로크의 경험주의 교육론은 인간의 자유를 전제하고 있다는 점에서 근대교육의 휴머니즘 성격을 한층 강화시켰다는 것을 보여준다.

The purposes of this study are to observe the concepts of Locke’s empiricism and then to clarify the characteristics of his empirical epistemology based on it. The conclusions are following: First, Locke asserted that all ideas were obtained only from experience and the ideas were the products of experience. He also insisted his empirical epistemology that knowledge obtained by sensation and reflection was just true and useful for humans’ happiness. Modern philosophy laid the focus on human being understanding the world and nature, instead of God. Locke’s empiricism that put emphasis on observation, experiments and experience brought the scientific development and the extension of knowledge in the 18th century. He resisted the scholastic viewpoints of Middle Age and developed his own empiricism on the basis of Baconism inducing a new viewpoint through observation, experiment, and induction. Second, Locke settled down his empirical epistemological viewpoints that humans in an empty mind, tabla rasa, obtained ideas through experience and the ideas became knowledge about the objects. In the book of 〈Some thoughts concerning education〉, he compiled the theory of formal discipline and realistic education for gentlemen based on the reason of an active free human formed by experience into a book. The educational theories of Locke’s have still had strong effects on the contemporary education in the 21st century.
