A Study on the Retirement Allowance: for the Case of Employee in Universities and the Government-supported Research Institutes

The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether the current social security system in Korea guarantees sufficient retirement alowance for the employee in the Government-supported Research Institutes, and public and private universities. First, social security wealth of representative employees is estimated by calculating expected future retirement grants. Second, wage replacement ratio is measured in order to judge whether the elderly’s life is financially secure. The results show that the current system provides mostly with sufficient retirement allowance for the aged. A long-run funding crisis in the state pension system has, however, been expected. Also wage replacement ratio depends heavily on the kinds of state pension system and the retirement time which generates inequity problem. Another research is needed to solve this problem.
