〈전우치전〉으로 살펴본 영웅소설의 변화

The alteration of heroic romance on 〈Jeon Woo Chi Jeon〉

실재했던 인물이었던 전우치와 그를 소설화한 〈전우치전〉을 통해 영웅소설에 나타났던 변화의 한 양상을 살펴보려 했다. 분석의 결과, 실재 인물 전우치는 민중적 영웅으로서의 면모를 갖춘 사람이었으나 소설 〈전우치전〉은 전우치의 민중적 영웅성을 제대로 드러내지 못하고 있었다. 전우치에게서 비판적 사회의식을 거세시킨 것이 가장 큰 이유라고 할 수 있는데, 경판 37장본과 김동욱본에서 이러한 특징이 두드러지게 나타나고 있었다. 그러나 경판 37장본에서 김동욱본으로 그리고 신문관본으로 이어지며 〈전우치전〉은 전우치의 민중적 영웅성을 강화하는 방향으로 변모되고 있었다. 이것은 〈전우치전〉의 개작자들이 이 작품을 통해 사회적 문제의식을 담아내기 위한 노력을 지속적으로 기울이고 있었다는 것을 보여주는 것이다.

This paper is written to search for an aspect of the alteration of heroic romance according to the study as a real person “Jeon Woo Chi” and as a character in novel 〈Jeon Woo Chi Jeon〉. The result is that the real person “Jeon Woo Chi” was the man who possessed the qualities of the public hero, but 〈Jeon Woo Chi Jeon〉 did not show the feature of the public hero as the real person “Jeon Woo Chi” because the critical social consciousness was eliminated in 〈Jeon Woo Chi Jeon〉. This difference was revealed in 〈Kyong Pan 37 Zang Bon〉 and 〈Kim Dong Uk Bon〉 remarkably. However, being connected to the different versions of later generations, 〈Jeon Woo Chi Jeon〉 was having exposing the feature of the public hero more remarkably. This is to show that authors, who adapted 〈Jeon Woo Chi Jeon〉, have had an effort to expose the critical social consciousness.
