This paper tries to analyze the role of standards in international trade both theoretically and empirically. Since standards can be a determinant of trade pattern, we reinterpret standards in terms of Neo-classical trade theory and Neo-Schumpeterian perspective, respectively. We found the close relationship between exports and standards, using the cross tabulation analysis with the data of 738 Korean firms. The results show that in relative to the firms with lower export ratio or non-exporters, the firms with higher export ratio adopt more intensively standardization strategy, invest more inputs in standardization activities, acquire more standards or accreditation titles, and use both national and international standards. However, they should be tested in more sophisticated way.
