The purpose of this paper is to show the empirical measurement way for using categorical variable in DEA(data envelopment analysis) efficiency under input oriented CRS(constant returns to scale) and VRS(variable returns to scale) condition for 35 world container seaports in 2007 data for 4 inputs(berth, depth, total area, and number of crane) and 1 output( container handling amount, TEU). The main empirical results of this paper are as follows. First, containerports in category 1 show the efficiency increase in categorical BCC model, compared to the general BCC model. Second, individual categorical model, general categorical model, and the excluding categorical model show the rapid increase of efficiency value compared to the general CCR and BCC models. The policy implication to the containerport policy planners is that they should introduce the new method like the categorical variables in DEA for enhancing the accuracy of measuring the containerport’s efficiency by considering the noncontrolable and controlable varialbles, and categorical variables after grouping the DMUs or classifying the inputs or outputs.
