This study describes how to view language on the basis of newspaper headlines. It tries to illuminate how the readership recognize language by analysing whether newspaper headlines are worded in plain or difficult terms. Newspaper headlines are written in Hanguel(the Korean Alphabet), Chinese Characters and the Roman Alphabet. Chinese Characters and the Roman Alphabet are harder than Hanguel for readers to understand. Therefore, newspaper headlines written only in Hanguel are categorized as a linguistic type formed in nationalistic view of history and those written with some letters of Chinese Characters and the Roman Alphabet as a linguistic type shaped in colonial view of history. With the changes of time, newspaper headlines with Chinese Characters decrease but the appearance of the Roman Alphabet and technical terms tends to increase gradually. A desirable pattern of newspaper headlines should contain as many Hanguel as possible so that we can develop the linguistic culture of Korean newspapers.
