The Use of Child Care Centers for Infants of Working Mothers

Using the second wave data of the Panel Study of Korean Children (PSKC), this study explores whether working mothers placed their infants in child care centers and what factors influenced their selection process. Among the 1,904 families in the PSKC, 449 families with working mothers using any kind of nonparental care arrangements for their infants at the time of the first survey were included in the analysis. Since our research questions addressed whether the families used child care centers among various care arrangements, a logistic regression analysis was also conducted. The results show that demographic variables (mothers’ education, household income, mother’s employment, and family structure) were significantly related to the child care use for infants, whereas there was no child-rearing variable.
