Application of CPTED & Analysis on the Characteristics Related to the Fear of Crime in Apartment Complex

The purpose of this study was to explore the degree of CPTED application by apartment complex size and to examine relationships of apartment complex residents’ fear of crime with application of CPTED, outdoor space utilization, and social interaction among the residents. Fifteen 5-year-old apartment complex in Cheongju, Chungbuk, were investigated based on checklist of CPTED guidelines through field observations, and a questionnaire survey of 150 residents was conducted in order to achieve the objective of the study. Data were analyzed using statistical techniques including analysis of variance and independent sample t-test. The findings are as follows: 1) Regarding a degree of CPTED application, fifteen target apartment complexes were shown 60 percents of a total CPTED guidelines score. Items of landscaping got the highest percent, while outdoor piping got the lowest percent. 2) Residents felt more fear of crime at night than during day, in the elevator, and in underground parking lot. 3) There was no significant difference of fear of crime according to social interaction among the residents. 4) There were significant difference of fear of crime based on utilizing their outdoor space in a promenade and landscaping zone during the day and at night.
