남명 조식 사상의 성격 규정과 양명학적 경향

Namyung Josick’s Theory and an inclination for Yangming School

남명 조식의 사상은 어떤 성격을 가지고 있는가? 필자는 그가 양명학적 경향을 가지고 있다고 본다. 이는 신유학의 갈래 문제이기도 하다. ‘성리학 양명학 호남학 신학(新學; 왕안석)’은 각각 ‘심=리+기, 심=리, 심=기, 심=0’으로 본다. 조식은 거대 자아 이론으로 나간다. 이는 왕수인의 대장부 이론과 비슷하다. 왕수인과 조식은 출발점에서는 다르다. 그러나 도달점이 같다. 왕수인은 치량지와 사상마련(事上磨鍊)을 주장한다. 이 마음이 곧 리이다. 따라서 그 리를 실천해야 한다. 지행합일이 그것이다. 이런 실천 속에서 천하를 한 몸으로 삼는 대장부가 탄생한다.(「대학문」) 조식은 마음을 칼에다 비유한다. 쇠를 달구어 때리고 담금질해서 시퍼런 칼날을 만든다. “안으로 밝은 것이 경건함이고, 밖으로 자르는 것이 의로움이다.” 마음도 그처럼 담금질해서 세상을 바로잡아야 한다. 이는 붕새나 만석들이 종 등에 비유되는 거대 자아이다. 마음을 왕수인은 긍정적으로 보지만, 조식은 단련해야 할 것으로 본다. 이렇게 출발점은 다르다. 그러나 도달점은 세상을 바꾸는 큰 사람이다. 이런 점에서 조식의 사상은 양명학에 가깝다.

What kind of philosophical type is Josick’s theory? I think that he has an inclination for Yangming School. There are four types of philosophy in Neo-confucianism ; ① mind = li + qi ② mind = li ③ mind = qi ④ mind = 0 ; ① ; Zhuxi’s school of the nature-principle ② Lu Jiuyuan & Wang Shouren’s school of Mind ③ Luo Qin-shun & Yi Yi’s school of mind-matter ④ Wang Anshi & Chen Liang‘s philosophy. Josick goes to a theory of huge self. This resembles Wang Shouren’s heroic man theory. they are different in a point of departure, but come to the same conclusion. Wang presented the theories of realizing of the innate knowledge, training & grinding in affairs. My mind is principles. So man must practice the principles. It is a unity of knowing and acting. This is a heroic man who regards the world as his body. Josick compares mind with sword. Sword is made by hitting & quenching the burning steel. “It is a seriousness which is illuminating internally It is a righteousness which is cutting externally.” Man must be quenching his mind and rectify the world by mind-sword. This is a huge self figured to be a fabled roc, a very big bell which can contain a 10,000-bushel crop, etc. Wang thinks mind positively, but Josick negatively. Mind must be tempered. Both starting point is different. and terminus ad quem is same.
