A study on the teacher practicum in an overseas English teacher training program

The goal of the present study is to examine the practicum in an overseas English teacher training program. Data were collected using mixed methods, including the program manuals, the participants’ response on surveys on the program, and the correspondences between the program coordinators. To examine how the participating teacher trainees perceived the effectiveness of the practicum, one-hundred nine (N=109) primary and secondary school English teachers who participated in the six-month intensive teacher training program in South Korea answered the questionnaires. The results of the survey revealed that the trainees perceived their experience of practicum as valued for an opportunity to raise their self-esteem as an English teacher, as well as to better understand the educational system of the English-speaking country. The results also showed that there were trainee needs for 1) an opportunity to observe classrooms with a variety of teaching subjects and grades, 2) a better communication on scheduling adjustment, and 3) a workshop with on-site staffs. Implications of the findings are discussed.
