The contribution recasts have made to second language (L2) development has been proved through many studies. However, there have always been disputes over the relative effects of recasts contingent on learner internal (e.g., learner proficiency, age, and working memory capacity) and external (e.g., target linguistic features and types of recasts) factors. This speaks to the need for more research into relative effects of recasts. The current study responded to the need for research by investigating the effect of corrective recasts in adolescent L2 learners’ accuracy improvement, particularly as concerns their use of regular and irregular past tense forms in English. The study employed a time-series design in order to examine learner development over time. Two middle school Korean learners of English participated in 16 conversational sessions for 8 weeks and the researcher provided recasts during the intermediary 6 sessions. The study found that recasts led to a considerable improvement in the learners’ overall accuracy in their use of both regular and irregular past tense forms, but their influence on the forms was somewhat different.
