Theoretical Considerations on the Decline and Persistence of Male Breadwinner Families

여성 취업의 증가로 시작된 남성부양자 가족의 쇠퇴는 진행되고 있으나, 그 속도는 매우 느리고 그 영향력도 지속되고 있다. 이 글은 남성부양자 가족의 형성과 변화 경로 그리고 개념적 속성을 탐구하여, 남성부양자 가족의 변화를 탐구하고 있다. 여성의 취업과 소득자로서의 역할을 넘어서서, 실제적 부양역할의 측면에서 여성의 취업, 가구 내 여성 소득의 기여도 및 노동시간, 규범적 부양역할의 측면에서 제공자로서의 남성성, 남성 정체성에 대한 사회적 기대의 변화를 고려하여 분석할 필요가 있다. 이 모든 요소의 변화가 동반되어야 남성부양자 가족의 변화를 젠더평등으로 이어지게 하는 새로운 가족/모델의 구축이 가능해질 것이다.

According to the growing participation of women in the labor market, male breadwinner families are in decline and is being replaced by dual earner families. But male breadwinner norms and gender inequality in family is sustained persistently. This paper analyses the historical formation, changing paths and the theoretical concept of breadwinning work. Breadwinnng work is divided two dimensions as follows. First, de facto breadwinning are explained by earnings, labor force participation, and time committed to the labour market. Second, normative breadwinning are explained manhood as the provider, social expectation to men’s role and identity. In order to claim the decline of male breadwinner families, more multidimensional approach to ‘breadwinning’ is required.
