A Study on the Determinants of the Demand for Reverse Mortgage in Korea

1. CONTENTS (1) RESEARCH OBJECTIVES The purpose of this research is to investigate into the characteristics of reverse mortgage market in Korea using a survey data collected in 2008 by Korea Housing Finance Corporation. (2) RESEARCH METHOD Basic descriptive statistical methods and ordered logit analysis were applied to the data considered proper after deleting some defective responses. (3) RESEARCH FINDINGS Individual characteristics suspected as having some significant correlations with the demand for reverse mortgage could be tested and important implications for the future operation of the reverse mortgage guarantee program could be derived from the result. 2. RESULTS The research findings throw some practical guidance on the government's trial to expand reverse mortgage market in Korea. Also variables not considered in previous studies but having both statistical significance and policy implications for the future operation of the program could be identified.
