A study on Korean understanding of ‘conscientization’

한국 사회에서 민중 교육론의 핵심 개념 중 하나인 ‘의식화’는 ‘좌경 이념을 주입시키는 교화’라는 왜곡된 의미로 고착되어 사용되어 왔다. 본 연구는 이러한 ‘의식화’의 개념적 의미 변화 과정을 신문사설 프레임 분석을 통하여 고찰함으로써, 언어의 선택적 사용과 현실의 이데올로기적 재구성 과정과의 관계를 분석한다. 동아, 경향, 한겨레 3개 신문사의 ‘의식화’ 관련 사설에 대한 분석 결과, ‘의식화’가‘교화’의 의미로 사용되기 시작한 것은 분단 이후부터이며, 군사 정권기에 이르러 반공 이데올로기와 강력히 결합되어 확고해졌음을 파악하였다. ‘교화’의 의미로서의 ‘의식화’를 사용하고 지속적으로 재생산했던 언론들은 주로 형식상 ‘정황 프레임’과 내용상 ‘안보(반공) 프레임’을 채택하여 ‘의식화’ 관련 사건의 원인보다는 과정과 결과로 인한 부정적 영향을 강조하는 경향이 있다. 이는 ‘의식화’가 ‘교화’의 의미로 고착되는 과정에 있어 정부와 언론사의 ‘반공 이데올로기’를 기반으로 한 재생산 기제가 작용하 였음을 의미한다.

In Korean society, the meaning of conscientization, one of the core concepts in popular education, has been distorted to imply ‘leftist indoctrination of ideology’. This article attempts to examine the relationship between the selective use of language and the ideological reconfiguration process of reality through the frame analysis to track the meaning of conscientization interpreted in newspaper editorials. Based upon thorough research of editorials from three different newspapers , it is identified that the term ‘conscientization’ began to signify the leftist indoctrination since the division of Korea, later colligated with anti-communist ideology during the military dictatorships in the 1970s and 1980s. Mainly adopting ‘situation frame’ and ‘anti-communist frame’, conservative media often emphasized the negative effects and violent results of incidents related to conscientization neglecting fundamental cause and background. The reproduction mechanism of anti-communist ideology led by government and media strongly skewed the meaning of conscientization in Korean society.
