The Logistics Performance Index(LPI) developed by the World Bank evaluates countries based on their logistical competitiveness. In 2007, Germany was ranked third behind Singapore and the Netherlands. In 2010, however, Germany moved up the ladder to rank first, ahead of Singapore. The logistics industry experienced a major downturn with the 2008 financial crisis, Germany being no exception. To provide an example, revenues of the German Railway Corporation and the German Postal Services(DHL) have declined more than 27%. The factors that contributed to the revival of the German logistics industry, despite such large revenue declines, are their advantages relating to their geographical positioning and well-developed infrastructure, as well as their know-how and extensive governmental support. In order to examine the possibility for economic growth related to the logistics industry in the context of Korea that is largely export-oriented, this study investigates the strengths of the German logistics industry. In particular, we shed light on the basic logistical concepts and analyze the distinct characteristics, trends and government policies in the German logistics system.
