Holistic Approaches to Art Education for Humanity: Recent Trajectory and Boundaries of the Discourses

본고는 홀리스틱(holistic) 미술교육에 대한 최근의 논의를 ‘인간 중심’ 관점에서 살펴본다. 특히 시각문화미술교육과 사회비판이론이 지향하는 인간 중심 관점들이 기존 홀리스틱 미술교육에 불러일으킨 새로운 논의를 살펴본다. 즉, 본 논문의 핵심은 홀리스틱 미술교육에 대한 기존 논의가 보다 최근 미술교육 담론 안에서 새로운 확장을 시도하고 있음을 소개하기 위한 이론적 논의에 초점을 둔다. 따라서 영성적 신성함과 총체성, 인문학적 가치 지향 홀리스틱 접근, 보살핌과 배려, 개방성/포괄/상관성, 그리고 3T원리(전수/교류/변혁)와 같은 기본 개념을 최근 미술교육 담론 안에서 논의한다. 그런 다음 살펴본 이론적 논의에 근거해 인간 중심 홀리스틱 미술교육 실천을 위한 제언들을 간략하고 일반적인 수준에서 제시한다.

This paper aims to conceptualize holistic approaches to art education for humanity. After a brief investigation into holistic approaches to education in general, it discusses about holistic approaches to art education that weigh the value of nurturing our humanity. The primary foci of this discussion include spirituality and wholeness, holistic approaches centered at the value of humanity, caring thinking, openness/inclusiveness/connections, and 3T strategies: transition, transaction, and transformation. Looking at these overarching concepts from more recent discourses in art education, this paper puts more emphasis on the needs for holistic approaches to nurture humanity. Following this theoretical trajectory investigated, this paper, at the end, shares ideas for the practice of holistic approaches to art education in this direction. First, it calls for the needs for consilience requiring transdisciplinary approaches. Second, it proposes reinterpretation of the established theories and practices of art education from holistic approaches emphasizing the origin and condition of human being. Third, it requests both individual consciousness of social responsibility and efforts to take associated transformative action. Fourth, it addresses the needs for open mind in order to celebrate various moments of life well balanced and harmonized. Finally, it offers chances to reshape our educational practices from different standpoints while reflecting transition, transaction, and transformation.
