The Effect of Homeownership on Crime Rate

Homeownership has been recognized one of the important factors in community safety as well as social welfare but little empirical research exist investigating its effect on crime. This study combined census and crime statistics to assess the effect of homeownership on crime rate throughout the country. Two stages least squared model analysis method was used considering the reciprocal relationship between homeownership and crime rate. The results showed that homeownership had negative effects on five major crimes as well as property and violent crime types, controlling for demographic characteristics and environmental factors. Crime prevention policies recognizing the importance of homeownership were discussed based on the findings.
