The article examines the historical development of the family in Russia in the 18th – the beginning of the 20th century. The legal regulation of family and marriage relations, demographic economic processes, internal family relations, the relationship between of the family and the society. Have been identified such features of the Russian family as the significant role of the state and the Russian orthodox church in the family sphere, the low development of private life, public character of family relations which was the characteristic of the majority of the population of pre revolutionary Russia.
