가까운 몇 년 사이 어휘 교육에 대한 관심이 높아졌지만 어휘 교육과 관련한 연구사를 다룬 논의가 없다. 이 글은 어휘 교육 연구사를 살펴봄으로써 앞으로 어휘 교육 연구의 방향을 찾는 데 도움을 주는 것에 뜻을 두고 쓴 글이다. 연대별 어휘 교육 관련 연구물의 수를 볼 때 2000년 이후 어휘 교육에 대한 관심이 상당히 높아졌다. 연구물들을 크게 국가 수준 교육과정 문서 체제를 기준으로 성격, 목표, 내용, 방법, 평가, 그 밖의 것으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 그 결과 어휘 교육 이념, 필요성, 위상, 실태 분석, 목표에 관한 연구가 있어야 됨을 알았다. 어휘 교육 내용과 관련하여 토박이말이 들어갈 자리를 생각한 내용 체계화, 지도 요소 선정, 기초/기본 어휘 선정 연구가 이루어져야 함을 알았다. 어휘 교육 방법과 평가 관련해서는 많은 연구물들이 나름의 가치가 있지만 현장에 직접 도움을 줄 수 있는 구체적인 방안을 마련하는 연구가 있음을 함을 알았다. 무엇보다 교육과정의 변화 및 교과서 변화로부터 자유롭고 빠르게 바뀌는 언어 사용 환경에 발맞춘 어휘 교육 연구가 이루어져야 함을 알았다. 이 글이 여러 사람의 힘과 슬기를 모아 알찬 어휘 교육을 하는 데 도움이 되길 바란다.
Recent years have witnessed a rising interest in vocabulary education, but there hasn’t been any discussion on the historical nature of the related studies. The purpose of this paper is to help define the direction of future vocabulary education study by taking a look at the history of studies related to vocabulary education. The number of studies related to vocabulary education has been increasing since 2000, and according to the standards of the national curriculum, such studies are divided largely into characteristics, goals, content, methods, evaluations, and others. The results showed that studies on the ideology of education, necessity, status, actual condition analysis, and goals should be initiated. Regarding the methods and evaluation of vocabulary education, many studies have their own worth, but it is necessary to conduct studies that can provide specific ways of directly helping in the field. Above all, studies on vocabulary education that are free from curricula and textbook changes and which keep pace with the rapidly changing environment for language use are necessary. Hopefully, this paper will help outline what constitutes meaningful vocabulary education by collecting the power and wisdom of many people.
