A study on how to implement microteaching to improve pre-service elementary English teacher’s TEE ability in their teacher training course

This study aims to provide some suggestions on how to implement microteaching effectively as a way of enhancing teaching skills of pre-service elementary English teachers. Thirty-five pre-service teachers participated in the present study. For the microteaching, they were divided into 10 groups and each student taught 10-13 minutes. Before the microteaching, they had a conference with the instructor to receive feedback on their lesson plans and English scripts. The students' microteaching was videotaped and evaluated by their peers and the instructor in a follow-up session. As a post-microteaching activity, pre-service teachers wrote reflective journals in which they analyzed their own teaching by watching the video recording. The analysis of the reflective journals and the comments from the peer evaluation indicated that microteaching helped them to become aware of the importance of the use of classroom English, teacher's roles, and difficulties in teaching processes. Self-analysis of microteaching enabled them to realize the weaknesses and the strengths in their teaching behavior. Microteaching was found to be valuable in promoting pre-service teachers to engage in teaching practice, to gain a deeper awareness of teaching processes and to make them feel confident in their own English teaching.
