Resume the Painting

Painting was the apex of modernism, yet it summed up the development of history of art. For this reason, it has been abruptly undone and replaced by three dimensional, or multi media art pieces. Minimalism and Conceptual art produced and proliferated a new form of art that had the viewers strongly involved in art works and obliterated the conventional art making, challenging the idea of painting as a supreme, genius, and complete achievement of the artist. Against the presence of objects as art works, in 1980s, Barbara Rose and Donald Kuspit attempted to revive painting depending upon Greenberg’s theory on modernism and avant-garde among many proponents of the traditional aesthetic. Yet their suggestions did not initiate a considerable blossom of painting, and their ideas were regarded as theoretic fallacies. Painting, rather, can reach the good old status by transgressing the Greenbergian theory, which limited its sources to the Western male high artists. Since his “Avant-garde and Kitsch”, Greenberg has been the advocate of formalistic modernism theory, based upon binary structure that implies superiority of one over the other. When the criticism commences to deconstruct the Western model of modernism, there would be a real chance of rebirth of painting exploring various subjects and expression.
