From Painterly Space to Virtual Space; A New Time-Based-Art and its Technological Imagination

This writing is an attempt to discover some constructive relationships between fine art and multimedia art by which art of this century is redefined. Actually, since the late 20th century, our human perception to the creation of the arts has achieved its thematic and aesthetic vehicle to expand new expressive possibilities in art with the rise of new media technology and multimedia art. Amongst the representative aesthetic devices of digital multimedia art, it is Interactivity that an active participating into the synthesis process of the different role between the viewer and the artist has led us a new epistemology of perception. The consequential products of this new media art create virtual reality. Virtual Reality particularly produced by means of digital multimedia art work enhances the viewer’s sensory participation into the works of art. And the rich contents from the moving images produced by artistic imagination have been transforming old spatial aspects from a static meaning into a new dynamic time-based-art contents, i.e., Virtual Space whose essential ingredient is borderlessness and unlimited expanding both virtual and physical; this is new paradigmatic change in the history of art. The evolution of artistic imagination itself, parallel with the technological advances, has become new environments for new forms of art in the age of digital technology. The convergence of art and technology, a new kind of compromise between the human being and his world and borderless infiltration between things and images, will construct the future-oriented multimedia digital culture.
