The curriculum and educational system in Western universities have been much discussed in Korea, since they are believed to provide possible models to improve its standard of art education. This paper, however, is concerned with the philosophical and theoretic issues which can be roughly termed ‘post-modern art education’. It values most ‘Nihilistic nature’ in the values of the postmodern theory in art education, as this can offer an impetus to change in the conservative university education in Korea. In details, this essay underlines ‘Visual Literacy’ in pre-university course which improves the intensity of discussion between students and teaching staffs in further education. The development of new thinking in the discipline of art history in the West, ‘New Art History’, can be closely viewed with its social and psychological re-value of art and artist. It is highly probable that the theoretical issuses arising from New Art History can help art students to understand the nature of visual arts. As multi-culturalism is now the central theme of art education, the traditional Korean art, which has been marginalized by Modernism can be more valued and further readdressed with the theoretic support of Post-Colonialism. If one agrees to the points raised by Post modern art education, the curriculum and educational system in Korean universities should be readdressed with more importance of visual expression and theoretic approach to vision, and traditional Korean art.
